The Definition of Communication

Tired of wondering exactly what the definition of communication is? Well, read on to learn everything you will ever need to know.

cans, telephone, can telephone, communication

Main entry: com-mu-ni-ca-tion
Pronunciation: ke myu ne ka shen
Function: noun
Date: 14th century

Definition:
the process of transferring information between a sender and a receiver through various methods (verbal words, nonverbal actions, and writing).

Note: What the definition does not mention is exactly how much of a two-way process it really is. Without the sender or the receiver, successful communication will not and cannot take place. If the sender does not transmit a message to a receiving individual, mutual understanding is impossible. Likewise, the receiver must be willing to listen and absorb the sender's message, fully translating the information themselves in order to discover the sender's intended meaning.
